Abstract

Only in the last few years has domestic violence been recognized as a major problem in African culture. While the problem is many centuries old, recognition of it as a major distraction from the gospel mandate is just now taking place within our society and even more slowly within Seventh –day Adventist Church in Africa. The aim of this paper is to examine the cultural dimensions of domestic violence in relation to women “submission in (Eph 5:21-24) in the context of Adventist Theology and Missions in Africa. This paper is of the view that domestic violence in its entirety is injurious to women’s health and that the erroneous interpretation of Biblical texts in the context of marriage and family encourages domestic violence while an egalitarian relationship amongst couples promotes wellness, growth and mission in Africa.
