Abstract
Animals have fundamental unalienable rights and must be treated with respect as having inherent values and as ends in themselves rather than as means to achieve others’ ends. Animal rights and care are integral parts of the ecological balance. Biblical ethics are sacrosanct and all-encompassing. To what extent does the Bible prescribe humane treatment of animals? Are these consistent in both the Old and New Testaments? Does God practice what He preaches on this account? Is godliness and godlikeness inclusive of humane treatment of animals? Does the current state of animal care and animal rights in Africa comply with the biblical prescriptions? This paper enumerates this ailing issue of animal care and rights in the African continent, offering salient suggestions on the way forward.
