Abstract
The task of nation-building is all encompassing and all-embracing feat. The men may have been in the forefront of leadership, economy, and security but the women were not redundant, even in patriarchal societies like Ancient Near East and Israel. Women are the mothers of the nation who cradle the people physically, emotionally, and mentally. Israel’s exodus from Egyptian slavery being the significant marker of the birth of Israel as a nation, it is expedient to examine the role of key women in this process of national development and liberation. Pre-exodus women such as Sarah, Rebekkah, Rachael, Leah, Joseph’s wife, Egyptian Mid-wives, Pharaoh’s daughter, Jochebed, Mariam, and Zipporah would be considered to elucidate their roles in the development of Israel as a nation. Gleanings from their experiences would inform the role of African women in national development in general and Nigeria in particular.
