Abstract
Privately owned tertiary institutions are predominantly faith-based in Nigeria. Their academic calendar is generally devoid of strikes and their campuses eschew violence and moral decadence prevalent elsewhere. For students in these institutions to get the holistic training of the mental, moral, social, spiritual aspects of life that they guarantee, the staff and faculty must exhibit such qualities. As the primary adult agents of socialization and mentoring within these systems, the faculty and staff must be spiritually nurtured for positive impact on students’ experiences and outcomes. This study addresses the spiritual experiences, spiritual care giving and worship attendance of the faculty and staff of Babcock University (BU). Given the complex nature of spiritual care, both qualitative and quantitative techniques were used in gathering data for the study. A survey was used to explore issues relevant to the study. Majority of BU staff members (above 70%) feel that working in BU has positively affected their spiritual life. They delightfully enjoy the devotional and other worship services in BU and see that the topics are very relevant to their life situations. Over half of them feel that spiritual care is adequate on BU campus. How was this achieved? How can these be sustained? What are the challenges? How can these effects be shared with other faith-based institutions? This study explored these issues and made relevant recommendations.
