Adam and Eve were originally innocent, naked, and unashamed (Gen 2:25). Their disobedience led them into sewing fig leaves together to make coverings for themselves to conceal their nakedness. Because of the inadequacies of their self-made “fig leaves covering,” God made “garments of skin” and personally clothed them. Why were they, after covering themselves with the “fig leaves covering,” still feeling uncovered, ashamed and hiding from God? What made this covering insufficient to conceal their perceived nakedness and shame? Why would God still go ahead to make “garments of skin” to “cloth” them, despite the “fig leaves covering” they covered themselves with? Why would God prefer to use animal skin in making this garment rather than something else? What do their nakedness and shame imply? This paper examines the text exegetically and theologically in attempt to answer these questions.
