Abstract
Domestic violence appears to have been narrowed to some specifics, such as psychological, physical, cultural, economic, emotional, sociological violence etc. Many women have in fact accepted, most times unconsciously, these violent trends as normal; a way of life without realizing they are being abused. This study considers the issues of domestic violence from a socio-legal perspective and suggest possible reforms. This paper is divided into three major sections. The first highlights some of the values, language, proverbs, traditions, cultural beliefs, religious mind-sets, etc., of different ethnic groups in Nigeria as catalyst for domestic violence among the people. The second section examines the legal instruments in Nigeria poised to remedy the cultural stereotype induced domestic violence; and the third section considers the extent to which the laws against domestic violence in Nigeria have addressed the issues.
