Abstract

The paper investigates the effect of information literacy skills and library user education on use of information resources by undergraduates at Babcock University, Nigeria . As information output is exponential, university libraries have the challenge to provide adequate user education to fresh students in order to improve their information literacy skills. A high level of information literacy by the undergraduates will enhance their information access and use skills in an increasing ICT information environment. Unfortunately, many undergraduate students lack the requisite skills to access, evaluate and use information for their educational pursuit. The study therefore, investigates the contributory factors to this phenomenon in order to ascertain how to redress the situation. The study adopted the survey research design while questionnaire was used for data collection. The study population was 1,318 300level undergraduates of the business and science and technology schools. Data were analysed with descriptive statistics. The study revealed that library user education and information literacy skills have positive effect on the students' academic performance. It was therfore, recommended that the Babcock University Library should redouble it's effort in providing user education to undergraduate students to enhance their information search and use skills.
