Abstract

The study explored the coverage of breast cancer in October 2010 and 2011 by two Nigerian newspapers- The Punch and The Guardian to find out the prominence, the sources of the reports, and the editorial forms of the reports. The threat posed by breast cancer in Nigeria is a serious one. The print media through its health information dissemination role can draw attention to this health issue thereby mobilising efforts towards addressing the problem. This work therefore sought to establish the extent to which the print media are working to set public agenda for breast cancer in the world cancer month which is October based on the importance of effective media coverage in prevention and management of the disease. It was discovered among others that most of the reports on breast cancer were in news format showing that the newspapers performed more of an information role than doing an analysis. It was discovered that the newspapers did not give prominence to health issues in terms of position and space. The researcher recommends that the media should give more coverage to breast cancer especially news analysis and editorials. Vital information on breast cancer, both preventive and curative can help the Nigerian woman as the most affected practice the knowledge acquired.
