Abstract
Religious violence and crimes are one of the challenges facing a country with multiple religion and culture. In Nigeria, the menace caused by these crises cannot be overstated. This situation manifests mostly in the northern and western regions of the country. Government and several NGOs are trying day and night to extinguish the fire of religious crises in Nigeria as experts argued that is it no doubt part of the problems preventing a modern Nigeria from emerging and drawing the people and government of Nigeria back to the dark ages of rampant security challenges. The problems associated with religious violence cannot be waved away by mere hands and it appears that the government needs more outside-the-box thinking to battle this crisis. This study employs doctrinal research methodology to analyse primary and secondary sources of data, legislation, judicial interpretations and opinion of authors. The study found that religious violence is responsible for the destruction of many lives and properties in excess of millions of Naira. It found further that the conventional means of settling religious violence cannot totally solve the problems. The study therefore explores the applicability of alternative dispute resolution as a possible means of solving the seemingly unending shenanigans of religious violence which always lead to other forms of crimes in Nigeria.
