Abstract

Construction workers suffer from occupational health problems which include back ache from heavy loads, respiratory diseases from inhaling dust, musculoskeletal disorders, noise induced hearing and skin problems. In developing world, the risks associated with construction work are estimated to be 3 to 6 times greater in comparison to developed countries. Also the effective practice of occupational health safety among workers is deficient. The objective of this research is to determine the level of exposure of RATCON workers to hazards, describe the safety measures used and also to identify injuries workers face while at work. The use of descriptive study design was employed, and a self-developed questionnaire titled “Occupational Hazards and Safety Questionnaire” (OHSQ) 0.73 was used for data collection. A total number of 216 subjects participated in this research. Result showed that the workers are exposed to various hazards as thus, backache (83.8%), (75.9%) hearing problem, (75.0%) inhale fumes from tractors and machines, (76.4%) cough sometimes due to dust, (82.9%) injuries (70.8%) mechanical hazards, (72.7%) psychological hazard (stress). The study also revealed that workers don’t make use of their personal protective equipment as (70.3%) don’t use nose masks, (53.2%) don’t use helmet. It was recommended that workers should be adequately informed about the specific hazards associated with their jobs and safety measures they should follow to protect themselves.
