Abstract

The paper investigated the photocopy practice and awareness of copyright law by undergraduate law students in Ogun State. The objective of the study was to determine the level of awareness of copyright law by law students and to assess their photocopying practice. The descriptive survey was the research method used for the study. The population consisted of undergraduate law students of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye and Babcock Univeristy, Ilperu-Remo both in Ogun State in the 2013/2014 academic session. The 2013/2014 academic session has 510 registered law students in Olabisi Onabanjo University and 279 registered law students in Babcock University. Forty percent of the population of law students in each school was sampled for the study. This translates to 315. 315 questionnaires were distributed. 269 questionnaires were returned representing 85.3% rate of response. Data collected were analyzed using frequency count and simple percentages. The study shows that inspite of the high level of awareness of copyright law among law students; they still go ahead and infringe the law. The study also reveals that law students photocopy materials for personal use and because it is cheaper than buying books. Unavailability of books and inability to borrow from the library also account for the reasons law students photocopy books. Textbooks topped the highest in the list of materials photocopied by law students.
