Abstract

The problem of infertility in women and men as a reproductive health issue cuts across the globe and one that has the potentials to ship wreck marriages especially in Sub-Saharan Africa. Research indicate that this issue is increasing astronomically with the passage of time due to various factors that militate against women in particular. Most marriages in Africa if not all, are geared towards procreation and promotion of life. A woman rejoices with her husband and family when child bearing is achievable. While some women are blessed with motherhood, others find it difficult to achieve this. Seen within this context, there exist problems when a wife after few years of marriage is unable to produce children for the husband. The purpose of this paper is to explore and highlight some of the complexities underpinning infertility and its impact on women in Africa and the implications for pastoral counselling. The paper strongly advocates for a humane cultural attitude towards infertile couples and the need for child adoption where practicable.
