Job motivation and performance of cataloguers in Nigeria

Abstract

The study surveyed motivational factors of Nigerian cataloguers. The population comprised 100 participants at the 2015 Cataloguing, Classification and Indexing section of Nigerian Library Association held at Obasanjo Presidential Library Abeokuta, Ogun State. Questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. Out of 100 copies of the questionnaire distribute, 75 copies (75%) were completed and returned. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics such as mean and presented in tables.

The result of the study showed that the factors that motivate cataloguers were job status, promotion, ability to use initiative and working environment. Also, job performance measurement of the cataloguer indicated high performance ranging from work productivity, quality of work, ability to bring out initiative, among others. The result however showed that incomplete bibliographic records, moving into digitized collection, lack of facilities to work with etc. where the major challenges Nigerian cataloguer face in performing their cataloguing work. The study therefore recommend that library management should ensure that those motivational factors are always put in place in the library. Those challenging factors to cataloguers’ job should also be taken care of. Necessary modern technologies should be made available as well as training to enable them move into the digitized world with ease. Lastly, their working conditions should be improved.
