Mentoring supplements professional training of librarians as it promotes skill acquisition for improved performance and success in one’s career. But in the available literature there are no empirical studies on librarians’ mentoring for attaining career success in Nigerian academic libraries.

Total enumeration technique was adopted for sample selection. Data was collected using a questionnaire tagged “Mentoring and Career Success of Academic Librarians’ Questionnaire” (MCSALQ). The study had a 78% response rate. Data was analyzed using both descriptive statistics and correlation. The analysis was carried out using the SPSS version 17.
The study established among others that academic librarians in Ogun State have had mentoring experience (90%); they engaged in informal mentoring (58%) and majority found to practice the one-to-one mentoring type (67%). They had good mentoring relationship (65%). Further, they have attained career goal, higher income and possess new skills. Also, a significant relationship was found to exist between mentoring and career success of academic librarians in Ogun State, Nigeria (r = 0.401, P<0>
The study thus concluded that academic librarians are actively involved in the mentoring activity. This plays a positive role in ensuring their success in career. It therefore recommends that mentors and mentees should engage in and explore other forms of mentoring so as to maximize the benefits mentoring experience offers. Furthermore, library administrators should establish mentoring programs for employee development through skill acquisition and consequent success in career.
