Effect of Co-administration of Extracts of Vernonia Amygdalina and Azadirachta Indica on Some Liver Biochemical Indices of STZ Diabetic and Non-diabetic Rats

Abstract

Hepatic glucose and liver toxicity assessment of combined leaf extracts of Vernonia amygdalina
and Azardirachta indica were carried out in thirty diabetic and thirty non-diabetic rats divided into five
paired groups of diabetic and non-diabetic (six rats each) were administered extracts of Vernonia
amygdalina (VA), Azardirachta indica (AI), VA and AI combined, and NPH insulin (HU), while the two
controls (diabetic and non-diabetic) received placebo treatment for the 28 days. Results of biochemical
indices assayed in liver whole homogenate including liver glucose and urea concentrations, AST and ALT
activities, and AST/ALT ratio were for the non diabetic batch non-significantly (P>0.05) affected
(comparable) by combined extract administration when compared to normal control (NC) and HU groups.
In the diabetic batch where liver glucose was increased and AST activity, AST/ALT ratio and urea
concentration decreased significantly (P<0> indices in a manner similar and comparable to insulin administration. Total protein and albumin
concentrations also follow similar trend. Co-administration of VA and AI extracts used as a management
against diabetes mellitus is non-hepatotoxic and may modulate glucose metabolism in the hepatocytes of
both diabetic and non-diabetic animals better than the single extracts from the plants
