Abstract

The study investigated job performance of staff and the role of training and development in selected university libraries in Ogun State, Nigeria. Literature review had shown that library staff do not always have the knowledge to answer users query, assist users in the location of information materials and make effective use of information and communication technologies in the library. The populations for this study were 185 library staff in four selected universities in Ogun State. Enumerative sampling was employed since the entire respondents were involved in the study. Instrument used for the study were structured questionnaire and interview. 185 questionnaire was distributed to the respondents, 134 out of the 185 questionnaire distributed were duly completed and returned to the researcher. Through statistical analysis, the study established among others that training and development given to the respondents is based as the need arises, training and development programme available and preferred by the respondents were seminars, workshops, conference attendance, computer based training and job rotation. The study also established that training and development programmes make the job of the respondents more effective; it motivates then to perform their work, it helps to increase their productivity and it helps to ensure personnel growth. It was also revealed that there was a strong positive correlation between job performance of staff and the role of training and development in these selected universities. The study therefore recommended that regular training and development should be made available to library staff for acquisition of knowledge and skills, motivate, reinforce good performance and to keep abreast of the state of art especially in the aspect of ICTs.
