That radio as a medium of mass communication is constantly being sought-after by its ardent listeners which is constantly growing from day to day because of its major functional roles of informing, educating and entertaining is not in doubt. That it satisfies their constant desire to have any, some or all of these functions at any point in time is still subject of debate in many quarters of research. How well a radio station fulfills all or any of these traditional roles may have to do with the major purpose for the establishment of such a station. Especially as we live today in a world that bring lots of varieties in terms of station establishment to reach the various millions of audiences whose taste and preference in their use of radio differ.
This paper employed the uses and gratification theory and the innate strength of radio itself (nature and characteristics) to argue why radio still remains a major choice of people who seek a medium to relate with in our modern times. The paper concludes that despite latest inventions and the flamboyance with which they come, which seem to threaten radio’s existence, it will not only reinvent itself always but will continue to be a strong force to reckon with in the mass media world and its extinction is not even in sight.
