Abstract
This paper looked into the problems and prospects of broadcast programming in Nigeria broadcast media. It established that after the emergence f the broadcast media in Nigeria there has been a departure from what the broadcast media industry should look like in terms of programmes produced. Using the Social Responsibility Media Theory, and the Development Media Theory this paper asserts that broadcast programming is a duty that broadcast media owners owe Nigerians and the only way this can be done is to produce and schedule the right programmes within the framework of laws that regulate the broadcast media industry in Nigeria. The paper posits that the Nigeria broadcast outfits do not have adequate programmes and have in fact departed from the National Broadcasting Commission’s (NBC) stipulated programme production percentage. The paper established that quality programming can only be truly achieved in the industry if more stations are created by government, necessary rules enforced, enabling environment created through a free but equally responsible media. Various problems were highlighted that if taken care of, the broadcast media industry will do professional broadcast programming that will match the dreams of the founding fathers of broadcasting in Nigeria
