Abstract
The importance of music in the human experience is widely acknowledged in literature. Writing on the general role of music in human life, Music acts as a stimulant and soothes the nerves, can be a very good mode for mood conversion, bringing out the hidden emotions and a sense of relief. On the other hand some music may create noise pollution and are hazardous to life. However, music has also be found to be helpful in concentration, meditation. Thus, as a fine art groups of all ages are attracted to its sweet sound. Much of music is important and plays significant roles in all human endeavor; its place in Christian worship is also obvious. Since music is universally accepted as a means for communicating human emotions it should play important role in public worship. The Bible provides us with numerous principles that should guide the composition, choice and performance of music in worship, yet in an attempt to have the experience music offers in Christian worship many styles have been adopted. Some of these have not been without controversy in the history of the Christian Church. The globalization of this issue and the impact it definitely has on Seventh-day Adventist worship in Africa calls for an attempt to re-examine it, albeit succinctly. This chapter, therefore, is focused on the principles of contemporary worship music (CWM) and the implications it holds for Adventist music ministry. In this regard, this paper is divided into four main sections, namely, (1) a survey of the scriptural role of worship, (2) contemporary worship music practices, (3) Adventist philosophy of music, and (4) recommendations for Adventist music ministry.
