Abstract
The indispensible role of mothers in nurturing their offspring remains a biblical and historical fact. In ancient Israel, mothers were in charge of their children’s education until they are weaned. They also engaged in some domestic and field activities (basketry, spinning, and weaving tapestries and mats) which enhanced family economy. Today, however, social changes which manifest in a variety of ways seem to challenge this noble role. Using contextual biblical hermeneutics, the study examined the biblical role of mothers in parenting as benchmark for evaluating these supposed threats. First, the study discovered the exemplary roles of mothers such as Jochebed, Hannah, Mary (mother of Jesus), and Eunice in raising their children. Second, it identified economic regression which has given birth to dual-worker families and early separation of mothers from their kids and the quest for women’s liberation as major factors inhibiting the role of contemporary mothers in parenting. It recommended that contemporary mothers should understand and return to their God-given role of nurturing their offspring at least until they are weaned. Amidst economic regression, they can engage in private business or chose careers compatible with their unique role. Rather than being self-absorbed in feminist activities mothers are to align their desires in God’s wisdom. Like Deborah, they can find fulfillment as wives, mothers, and leaders in the society.
