Abstract

This study aimed at assessing the preparedness behaviours of women approaching menopause in Ikenne Local Government Area, Ogun State, South-Western Nigeria with their mental health preparedness as major point of concern. The study design was descriptive survey one using a 32-item pretested questionnaire probing five areas of menopause preparedness behaviours with the mental health forming a prominent factor. Both content and face validity with a reliability of 0.88 at Cronbach’s alpha were established of the instrument. A dual translation of English and Yoruba of the instrument was used to gather information from 380 women selected from 25 faith-based organizations. Also a three phase multi-stage cluster sampling technique involving the use of probability sampling techniques were employed.

Descriptive results showed the mean age of participants as 37. 5 years (SEM = 0.05; SD = 1.02) with the educational preparedness of 143(37. 6%) respondents indicated tertiary education. General knowledge about menopause when measured on a 40- points scale yielded a mean score of 13.23 (SEM = 0.07). Also a significant association was established between knowledge of menopause and demographic characteristics of the women at P-values less than 0.05. Similarly, there was a significant association of the respondents’ mental health and demographic data.

Conclusively, the study presented an average level of both knowledge of menopause and woman’s mental health preparedness behaviour for menopause. Therefore, there is a need for community-oriented health promotion education via supportive counselling intervention.
