Abstract
Marketing has become increasingly important for libraries as they seek to reach potential library users with news about the services on offer. This is especially so because libraries are not the only provider of information services but there are others with which libraries compete. Besides, libraries need to justify their existence and attest to their relevance with their parent institution. Competitive intelligence allows companies proactively anticipates market growth and change, and innovatively develop their strategic decisions which lead to appropriate marketing. Libraries in Nigeria need to take steps to ascertain their community needs and proactively take initiative to meet the needs. The paper discussed the role of marketing in gaining competitive intelligence for libraries in Nigeria. It highlights the importance of marketing library products and services and the highlights the approaches that libraries in Nigeria could utilize in marketing library product and services for competitive advantage. The paper concludes that librarians need to be aware of and sensitive to marketing in every aspect of their work; and recommends that libraries should adopt all available approaches to intentionally market library products and services
