Abstract
This paper examined the contributions of self-efficacy, reading and library use habits to academic achievement of senior secondary school students in Ogun State, Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population consisted of 54,907 third year senior secondary students (SS 3) in 295 public senior secondary schools in Ogun State, Nigeria. Stratified sampling technique was used to select 977 respondents. The instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire titled “Self-Efficacy, Reading, Library Use Habits and Academic Achievement (SERALUHAA)”. Data collected were analysed using Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation and Multiple-Regression Analysis The findings revealed there was significant positive relationship between self-efficacy and academic achievement (r =0.08, p <.05), a positive relationship also existed between reading habits and academic achievement (r =0.24, p <.05). The study also indicated that there was no significant relationship between library use habits and academic achievement (r =0.03, p >.05). The result further showed that self-efficacy, reading, library use habits jointly predicted academic achievement (R = 0.25, F3,964 = 20.94, P < 0 xss=removed xss=removed xss=removed t =0.06;>.05) and library use habits (? = -0.07; t = 0.04; p>.05) did not show any significant relative contribution to academic achievement of students in public senior secondary schools in Ogun State, Nigeria. The study concluded that self-efficacy, reading habits and library use habits were good predictors of academic achievement of students in public senior secondary schools. Therefore, it is recommended that educational administrators should properly mentor, encourage, persuade, monitor and fortify students in the aspect of self-efficacy, reading and library use habits and ensure that functional school libraries are available in a conducive environment in public senior secondary schools.
