Abstract
Over the years, people have been wondering on the ways that Pidgin English speaking in schools could influence the academic performance of students. Against this background, the study concentrated on influence of the use of Pidgin English on students’ academic performance with a case study of Sagamu Local Government Area. A descriptive survey research method of expost-facto was used for this study. The main instrument used for this study was self-constructed questionnaire administered on two hundred and forty students of SSS 1 and 11 randomly selected for two secondary schools in the study area. The data generated from the questionnaire were analysed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient®. The findings of this study revealed that the academic performance of students in Ogun state is being affected by the use of pidgin English and that this had a negative influence on the educational system. Based on the finding, the study therefore recommended that the school authorities, government and teachers should always do their best to provide and encourage the use of standard English for the intellectual development of their students. This will build and inculcate in them the desirable learning habits and a better educational achievement.
