Abstract
Within a span of decade, 45 private universities have been established and many more are in the pipe line. this is a positive developmant but there are tendeces that these private universities if not monitored on regular basis may compromise on minimumm academicdards ,standards, quality of staff which will impact negatively on the quality of their graduates. the question is :How can the regular monitoring of standards, staff and students, be achieved for national sustainable development in Nigeria?This question poses the need for the study. The research evaluates the mechanism that is (are) put in place by National Universities Commission (NUC) to monitor the operations of private universities in NIgeria. The study found that much has been achieved in the accreditation of programmes, system growth, and quality of graduates among others; the study recommends a reinvigoration in the area of staff welfare and staff development monitoring by NUC
