Abstract
The study investigates the attitude of parents towards the rearing of their handicapped children. The sample comprises of 100 parents (50 fathers and 50 mothers) from Ijebu North and Ijebu Ode local governments area. “Parental Attitude Scale” a self-assessment tool was specially developed for the purpose of the study. The scale has a reliability of 0.83 consisting of 20 statements. Result indicates that:
There is no significant difference between the attitude of fathers and mothers of the handicapped children.
That there is significant difference between the parents of high income and lower income level and also;
That there is significant difference between the attitude of literate and illiterate parents towards their handicapped children
The findings of the study indicate the importance of counselling focused specifically towards developing healthy parental attitudes which in turn result in acceptance of the child’s disability.
