Abstract
The need for mass communication practitioners to be constantly trained and retrained has never become more urgent. The challenges of modern information and communication technology, both in terms of new devices and their rate of obsolescence; growing ethical dilemma partly caused by the character and use of the information super-highway and certain professional lapses on the part of journalists and the complexity of reporting a global population jaded by the labyrinth of modern affairs have all underscored the urgent need for updateabilitv that can only be enduringly created by on-the-job training. Little is known about the frequency and nature of media operator’s on-the job training as well as the association between training and the proficient) of journalists. The study, which was designed to fill this gap, was a survey of 345 journalists working with 21 broadcast stations situated in Abuja, the federal capital of Nigeria. The stud)' found that journalism training had positive influence on job delivery, professionalism, capacity building and moderately positive influence on the motivation of broadcast journalists.
