Abstract

The introduction of the new media and the continuous development in digital technologies available to the audience, continuously affect the communication landscape in the society. One of these technologies, which is popularly used among Nigerian students as seen in empirical studies is WhatsApp. However, the ability to create a group on Whatsapp changes the communication pattern as it implies that an entire class of up to 256 members can exist and continually communicate on a virtual platform. To understand the practical details of such communication, this looked into WhatsApp group usage, interaction and information sharing among students of Babcock University and obtained its theoretical backing from the media technology determinism theory. A structured questionnaire was distributed to elicit data from 460 randomly selected students from the population of the undergraduate students of the university. The findings revealed that students belong to an average of 1-4 WhatsApp groups, which are predominately used for announcements. Subjecting the hypotheses to a single Linear Regression test, results showed that sanctions from lecturers on WhatsApp groups significantly influence free expression and reduced participation of students (p<0 xss=removed xss=removed>
