Abstract
The Niger Delta region of Nigeria has hosted several hydra headed conflicts over the years, with several non-state actors playing active roles. The principal reasons advanced by the people had been poverty in the midst of plenty and lack of adequate socio-economic infrastructure, including the demographic and environmental displacement occasioned by the reckless activities of oil corporations and collaboration by political elites. Though, the government initiated a host of programmes leading to arms reduction, leading to some form of tentative peace and human capacity development, so much is needed to be done in terms of addressing the problems of poverty and environmental insecurity. This study seeks to examine the connection between poverty, environmental insecurity and endemic conflicts in Nigeria's Niger Delta region, with the view of proffering solutions for resolving the imbroglio. The paper recommends that addressing the fundamental concerns is sine qua non to achieving sustainable peace and development in the Niger Delta region.
