Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the endoscopic and histologic findings in patients referred for Upper GI Endoscopy at the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, Osun State, Nigeria.
Methodology: Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy was performed on consecutive patients who were referred for endoscopy over a 6-month period. Their biodata, indications for endoscopy and symptoms were obtained. The endoscopic and histologic findings were analyzed.
Results: A total of fifty-seven (57) patients were studied during this period. The mean age of the patients was 48.7±14.2. The most common indication for endoscopy was dyspepsia. Thirty-three (33) patients (57.9%) had normal gastrointestinal mucosa at endoscopy, out of which, 23 (40.4%) had duodenogastric reflux. The most common histologic finding was chronic gastritis, which was found in 27 (49.5) patients.
Conclusion: Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy with biopsy for histology is important in the evaluation of patients referred because of one indication or the other. Biopsy should always be obtained for histology even when the mucosa is normal grossly.
