In African countries such as Nigeria, many well documented factors for instance socio cultural factors among others, dictate the presence and voice of women in public life. Women as a major contributor to the growth of any society starting from the local government level which is believed to be the closest to the people at the grassroot, have significant potentials to contribute to economic growth and social development of such society. It is believed that women and men have different biological and physiological genetic makeup but may share a lot when it comes to educational qualifications, socio-economic status, occupation, inter alia. In spite of this, they are faced with multifaceted exclusions and discrimination which limit their effective participation in national, state and local affairs when it comes to decision making in public life. Thus, this paper intend to ascertain whether local politics can enhance the involvement of women in decision making process in local government administration in southwest, Nigeria. Also, to examine, those factors that militate against the effectiveness of women in decision making at the local government level when compared to that of their male counterpart. A survey research design was adopted and the primary method of data collection included the use of questionnaire and supported by secondary source of data from extant literatures. Theoretically, the paper will be guided by liberal feminism theory. This paper, therefore, tentatively conclude that for there to be impactful development, greater participation of women in politics and in decision making at the local government level is essential, the government and every one concern (stakeholder) should ensure that every programme and policies to empower women in all ramification is introduced and flexible enough to implement.
