ABSTRACT
For academic excellence to be achieved in our private universities there must be proper supervision through a body designated to monitor, evaluate and assess the instructions provided. Therefore, this paper will seek to examine how supervision of instruction serves as an index for academic performance in private universities in Nigeria by giving a brief history of how private universities were established and the problems facing them. It will discover the purpose and benefits of instructional supervision, areas of instructional assessment and the various strategies and techniques used for instructional supervision, who should be the one to supervise the instruction and the functions of those supervisors. It will enumerate the relationship between effective supervision of instruction and academic performance of students, and identify the various problems facing supervision of instruction in Nigerian Private Universities.
