Abstract
This work on paternalism and its effects on social adjustment of in-school adolescents was designed to investigate and identify the various adjustment problems associated with in-school adolescence in Ibadan metropolis of Oyo State. A descriptive research method was used to obtain a detailed data, and a total of one hundred and fifty adolescents were used for this study and they were randomly selected from five different schools – Nickdel College, Akobo; Wesley School of Science, Elekuro; Peoples Girls Grammar School, Molete; International School (U.I); St. Patrick College, Bashorun. Information was collected using a self-developed questionnaire to elicit responses of respondents and the data collected were analyzed using t-test statistical analysis. Three research hypotheses were tested and findings revealed that adolescents experience various challenges in the family and community such as overbearing attitudes on the part of significant others. Recommendations made for the alleviation of this paternalistic attitude includes: Group counseling which should involve both the adolescents and their parents to develop special skills in facilitating understanding and behavior therapy offered with specialized techniques to help people with abnormal or complicated behavior pattern.
