Abstract

This paper is a critical analysis of the thematic preoccupations and the womanist concerns in Tsitsi Dangarembga’s Nervous Conditions. The study is qualitative and adopts the literary theory of Feminism and its African variant, Womanism, as approaches to evaluate the issues of patriarchy, suppression and other forms of mistreatment of female characters as exemplified in the selected fiction. The study reveals the various forms of subjugation and oppression faced by the female gender in terms of sex and their roles in the African society. Finally, in the light of these concerns, this study concludes with some highlights of the contributions of Tsitsi Dangarembga to African women literature and the discourse of gender equality to include the sensitization and conscientization of the female gender to rise above the challenges of subjugation and oppression by patriarchy through her intentionality towards self-advancement, empowerment and capacity building as represented in Tambu and her other female characters.
