Abstract
Extant scholarship asserts that women’s positions within the governance frameworks of society provide a significant indicator of the level of democracy in any society. In a postconflict society like Liberia, this observation is even more apposite given the high visibility of women in the political arena, as well as the ascension to power of Africa’s first elected woman head of state, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. This paper interrogates the dynamics of being a female politician and leader from a psychosocial perspective, employing an analysis of various socio-political, and psychological aspects of the presidency of Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf. In the final analysis, it investigates recent incidences that countermand the prevalent discourse on the Sirleaf presidency and call into question the Hope usually associated with that discourse, thereby raising questions for further investigation by scholars and practitioners.
