Abstract

This study intends to provide much needed information on stress and depression as some factors influencing cigarette smoking among male undergraduate students in Lagos state as this is relevant to the quality and longevity of life of citizenry. The study used descriptive survey research design. The populations of the study were the male students of Lagos state University. The simple random sampling was the technique used in selecting the valid respondents. A representative sample (n=7,757) were male of the total LASU undergraduate student population of 13,343. The sample size was a total of three hundred and eighty (380). From the findings gotten it was shown that 53.9% agreed that they are more likely to smoke if they feel anxious, stressed or uncomfortable while 11.8% disagreed and 45.2% agreed that in times of loneliness, smoking cigarette makes them feel better while over 54% disagreed. The study concludes that the negative impact of cigarette smoking is devastating and is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Apparently, the most serious health outcomes associated with smoking typically emerge later in life. It was suggested that Government and schools authorities should develop a sustainable framework to restrict smoking in schools in order to avoid health challenges.
