THE INFLUENCE OF GENDER, HOME TYPES AND AGE ON ADOLESCENT EATING HABIT OF YOUTH IN IKENNE LOCAL GOVERNMENT OF OGUN STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract

The study examined the influence of Age, Gender and home type on eating habit of youth. It made use of simple random technique in selecting 400 youth in Ikenne Local Government of O gun State, Nigeria. The age range of the respondents was between 15 years and 40 years with the mean age of 25.2 and standard deviation of 3.291. The ex-post factor research design was employed. A 20 item questions psychology of eating (PEQ) developed by Snell (1997) was adopted with four subscales were used in generating data for the study. Data analysis involved the use Independent t-test and Multiple Regression. The results indicated a significant difference existed in the male and female eating pattern. The t - table = 2.551 > tori = 1.96; df= 398 at a 0.05 level of significant three variables were found to the significant. Also, there is no difference in comparison of eating habit as regards to youth raised from monogamous and polygamous home setting. Finally, Gender, home type and Age accounted for 24.9% of the variance in eating habit. This is supported by the (FSi 397) of 3.135 which is significant than the table value of = 2.60 at a level of 0.05. On the basis of this finding, it is then suggested that the age range of the youth should be taken into consideration before assisting youth with poor eating habit Since eating habit is affected by gender the nutrition experts, social workers and those concern with health should create more- awareness on the poor eating habit affected as regard to sex.
