Abstract
No matter the legal status of anyone, he ought to be treated as a human being with all the accrued rights under both the domestic and international law. Under many Criminal Justice Administrations across the globe, prisoners are generally given ill-treatment, whereas, some other countries have moved beyond rehabilitation of prisoners to ensuring their absolute transformative identities. Prisons in Nigeria are faced with many impediments that hinder the all-embracing rehabilitation of many prisoners. The objectives of this study are to explore the rehabilitation processes of prisoners, the roles of the government/prison officials in this process as stipulated under relevant laws and the efforts of non-governmental organizations in the rehabilitative processes. The empirical design was used on inmates and staff of Shagamu prison in Ogun state, Nigeria to examine the impediments to the proper transformation of prisoners while serving their terms and even when they are out in order to avoid recidivism while the doctrinal method was adopted to examine the relevant legal framework that ensures that every prisoner experiences transformative identity. The work finds that recidivism among released inmates is on the rise and that even though there is recently an increase in rehabilitation programs, these schemes are not effectively transforming the inmates. It is recommended that government should increase the budget for prison management to accommodate effective rehabilitation projects while the prison officials should obey the laws to effect such schemes. This study concludes that rehabilitation of prisoners under the criminal justice administration can only be effective when all stakeholders make transformative rehabilitation the total essence of imprisonment.
