Abstract

Traditional Widowhood Rites and the Challenges of Parenting in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State is the focus of this paper. The study aims to find out the extent to which the widow copes with the challenges of parenting after fulfilling the widowhood rites. Traditional widowhood rites exonerate the widow from accusations of being responsible for her husband’s death, purify her from defilement and enable her deceased husband get a place in the world of the ancestors, make the widow to use her meager resources to satisfy the women folk (omu-Iyonwa), leaves her with untold suffering, dejection and abject poverty. These form the problem the widow faces in parenting of her children since she is left with little or nothing. The method employed by this study is historical narrative as it employed secondary and primary sources of data. The study found that the effects of widowhood on parenting gives a rippling effects on the widow. She doubles her responsibility as a father, bread winner and as a mother. Her little time and meager resources do not offer her the very best both socially and psychologically. The study recommends that the widow should be helped by all those around her to enable her cope with parenting. The widows can form a league where they can share their experiences, burdens, proffer solutions and help one another. They can act as a group to solicit help from governments and non-governmental organizations. Those who practice widowhood rites should put into consideration the parenting of the children of the deceased man.
