Abstract

Communication is the heart of inter-group relations. However, wrong communication system or poor communication strategies can easily become a pre-dispositional factor of conflicts. While the ubiquity of conflict is undeniable, communication as a strategy of conflict management has been found to be veritable and indispensable. In Nigeria, where majority of the citizens are illiterates and rural dwellers, socio-political, and religious conflicts remain part of their daily experiences. Despite the emergence of the contemporary Information Communication Technology (ICT) which had heightened interrelations among nations and variously exploited in conflict management and prevention, high level of illiteracy among Nigerian rural dwellers has robbed them of the gains of ICT. In the given circumstance, it is expedient to find a more accessible and dynamic system that is native for engendering dialogue or forestalling conflict situations. This paper therefore examines the relevance of Indigenous Communication System (ICS) as a viable alternative mode of conflicts settlement for the sustenance of the socio-cultural values and national development.
