FACTORS OF CONFLICT AND CONFLICT MANAGEMENT IN SELECTED UNIVERSITIES IN NIGERIA

Abstract
The study adopted descriptive survey design to investigate sources of conflict and assess the methods of conflict management in some selected universities in south-west Nigeria. Stratified sampling method was used to select Three hundred and seventy-six staff from the four universities (two public and two private) in south-west Nigeria. A self-structured 22 items questionnaire with a reliability coefficient of 0.64 was the instrument used in this study. The two research questions formulated were answered using table of percentage. The result showed that poor funding, lack of university autonomy and poor working conditions were sources of conflict in the public universities. The hypothesis formulated was tested using chi-square. The finding showed no significant differences in the method of conflict management used by both private and public universities, (X2 = 9.62, P = 0.38). Based on the result of the findings, it was recommended among others that collective bargaining andmpeaceful resolution of conflict should be embraced during conflict b) all parties as if facilitates mutual understanding and peaceful, working relationship.
