Abstract
The seemingly progress made since Nigeria returned to democratic rule in 1999 seems not yielded the expected results. Though considerable progress has been made in the areas of civil rights and citizens liberties. However, such privileges’ has been eroded by incessant violence and conflictual crisis associated with human, less natural disaster; resulting into many internally displaced persons as well as communal clashes recently fueled by the Herdsmen/Farmers conflict across the Nigeria. Many of which are failures of successive government to address fundamental issues like corruption, un-equal distribution of dividends of democracy leading to poverty, employment, infrastructural development and political power tussle among the policy holders in Nigeria. These aforementioned social ills indicators have been one of the challengers of peace and security in Nigeria, making real democracy impracticable and government inability to protect lives and properties of her citizenry. A conceptual method analysis was adopted to x-ray the importance of good governance as a panacea towards addressing some of these social ills in order to sustain peace and development. This paper however, found that corruption at high level with impunity has weaken Nigeria’s institutions, leading to insecurity of lives and properties. Thus paper concludes that for sustainable peace and development to be attained and sustained, “strong institutions” must be put in place and empowered, which in turn will provide orderliness and enhance efficiency, as well as creating problem-solving mechanism for government to address factors rocking the peace projects of Nigeria.
