Nigeria was artificially structured and named by the British. This nomenclatural coloration brought different ethnic nationalities together in what some scholars have described as an "unholy marriage". These ethnic nationalities located in different parts of the country with distinct languages, history and cultural values were made to coexist together by the British. Attempts have been made in the past to blame some of the national challenges facing Nigeria on the 1914 incident. This paper therefore interrogates issues emanating from the 1914 amalgamation, its impact on coexistence, unity and survival of the Nigerian State. It examines the perception of citizens and the merits and demerits of the amalgamation. In the content analysis of this paper, it made use of mainly secondary sources. The study identified both positive and negative influences of the amalgamation on the Nigerian State. However, there are different national challenges that can obviously be traced to the amalgamation and some of those problems have been compounded by some Nigerians who feel that there is nothing good in coexisting together as a nation. It is apparent that the beauty and strength of Nigeria lies in its diversity.
