Abstract

Climate change is a phenomenon that is currently plaguing the world and Nigeria is not excluded. The Low Carbon Economy (LCE) strategy is a proposed solution to mitigate the impact of climate change in the world. An effect inducing conflict on humans and the environment. Nigeria is currently experiencing the impact of this, thus, there is a need to intensify efforts to combat it else, such can lead to crises. This paper sought to analyse the prospects and challenges of achieving the SDGs on environment specifically Goal 13. Survey research design was adopted with the use of questionnaire tailored according to the research questions. The questionnaire were administered to selected sample size of 128 respondents, and was analysed accordingly. The paper revealed the prospects and challenges of achieving the SDGs in Lagos state, Nigeria. The LCE was identified as a solution to the impact of climate change and to the reduction of emission of greenhouse gases through the use of alternative energy sources that will bring about renewable, cleaner, sustainable and preferable alternative to the heavy usage of fossil fuels. Also, human activities was identified as the leading cause of climate change amongst other associated factors in Nigeria. Paper therefore recommended that there is a need for intensifying efforts to combat climate change. A paradigm shift to an economy based on alternative energy through a radical development and usage of innovative low carbon technology. Equally, capacity building and institutional reformation with investment in research and development are ways in achieving and reducing the lacuna confronting SDGs Goals 13 on environment.
