Abstract

The management of conflict in West Africa has been a subject of significant concern to the international community since the early 1990s. The preponderance of conflict in West Africa has derailed regional development and posed a threat to its growth. However, one cannot undermine the ECOWAS security efforts in peacekeeping and peace-making operations in the Sub-region. Nigeria has maintained a leading role in ECOMOG’s collective efforts to root out insurgent forces in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea- Bissau, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Togo. This work reviews Nigeria’s foreign policies and West Africa; its role in peace keeping and peace-making in the sub region and also those efforts at post-conflict social and economic reconstruction. One wonders why conflicts have not abated despite the commitment of ECOWAS. The study relied on secondary sources for information and a desk review study was undertaken. The paper recommends that harmonious working relationship should exist among policy makers and synergies between the security forces of ECOWAS member states.
