Abstract
The aim of this paper is to present a biblical theology of marriage and the family as a panacea to marriage breakdown in our society. Historically, marriage and the family is rooted in the Bible from creation. There has been attempts in different quarters of our society to thwart the original intentions for which God made man and woman and instituted marriage and the family for procreation and to replenish the world. Consequently, the lack of oneness in marital relationships is at the center of many family problems. Marriages suffer today because, either one or both spouses remain more devoted to self in their marriage relationship, than to one another. This shows a clear deviation from God’s purpose and the consequences of such deviations from the biblical model of marriage and the family, is manifested in the breakdown of law and order, the skyrocketing divorce and plurality of violence in families. The paper, utilizing data from the bible and secondary sources, advocates for society to return to the biblical model of marriage and family as to enhance family life and to nurture and build a veritable society that would stand the test of time.
