Abstract
This paper principally examined relevant local statutes regulating the carriage of oil by sea.The work also activelydiscussed those provisions dealing with carriage of goods and contract of carriage as it obtains in Nigeria and makes a case for the need to bring them at per with international best practices since, for now, and may be in a long while from now, as oil and gas or petroleum will continue to be the countries mainstay contributing more than 90% of Nigeria exports earnings.The paper seeks to ask the questions whether issues of oil pollution that may arise in the course of carriage of oil by sea and what are the relevant laws regulating prevention and liability regime.Is there a coherent and up to date legal regime in place in Nigeria to regulate International carriage of oil by sea? It is hoped that at the close of the work, any reader can with certainty identify some of the major laws that regulate carriage of oil by sea in Nigeria.
