Security to any society is not negotiable. It is a determinant of the kind of relationship that a society will have with other societies. A conducive and peaceful environment will enhance the system with opportunities that will attract investment and promote development. The local government is not an exception. This, however is not the situation in most local governments in Nigeria, especially in the North-East geopolitical zone of the country. The objective of the study is to examine the socio-economic and political implications of insecurity in local government in the country. The research adopted a qualitative research method, using documentary data. Data were derived from textbooks, journal publications, newspaper articles, seminar presentations and internet sources relevant to the study. The study population are the local governments in the affected states in North-East Nigeria. The paper observed that some of the local governments are bedeviled with the activities of Boko Haram, a notorious terrorist group. Their activities, including kidnappings and incessant killings, have led to massive loss of lives, destructions of schools, churches, mosques and government buildings. Foreign investments have been affected negatively, greatly impairing the development of the geopolitical zone, especially the rampaged local government areas. The study concluded that insecurity has destroyed most of the existing development and has limited all initiatives for further development in the zone. The consequences of these have further devastated an already ravaged economy of the country. This has had wanton consequences on the socio-economic and political development of the country. The study then, recommended that government should focus on investing more in education to tackle illiteracy and economic backwardness. Effective measures to be put in place to address high rate of poverty and unemployment by engaging the youths. Above all, the government should sincerely identify and foreclose sources of inspiration, funding and recruitment to the sect.
