Abstract

The association of acquired recto-vaginal fistula (RVF) with the human immunodeficiency virus is increasingly being recognized and reported in the literature Congenital recto - vestibular fistulae associated with imperforate anus is not uncommon, but it is rare to see children with acquired recto - vestibular fistula.

From 1997 to 2002, 13 children who presented to the Paediatric Surgical Unit of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital with acquired recto - vestibular fistulae were reviewed. The associations of this condition with HIV and management problems are discussed.
