Abstract
Network and communication play an important role in facilitating communications among users through sharing of resources. They are found in virtually in all range of applications, such as internet, telecommunications and communication systems. This book is written to present the fundamentals concepts of network and communication associated with typical internetworking of computer and associated devices.
The book is self-contained and includes a number of basic topics. A basic background of network is assumed. Characteristics and principles of common to typical networking are emphasized and basic network design and interfacing techniques are demonstrated via examples using the simplest possible devices, such as switches, hub, Ethernet cable, Network interface cards, etc.
The book has evolved from undergraduate lectures and notes developed for courses taught at the department of computer science.
The book is divided into two parts. Part 1: Computer Networks (chapters 1-5), the first part of the book introduces network fundamentals (chapter 1), Network requirements and concepts (chapter 2), Network communication (chapter 3), TCP/IP architecture (chapter 4), and Network security (chapter 5).
Part 2: Telecommunication (chapter 6 - 12). This part introduces the fundamentals of telecommunication and telecommunication networks (chapter 6 - 7), Basics of telephony (chapter 8), Electronic switching networks (chapter 9), Basic telephony systems (chapter 10), Basics of wireless communication (chapter 11), and (chapter 12) introduced modern telecommunication technologies.
The book can be used in a number of ways. Since the materials presented here are basic and do not require an advanced computer background, the book can easily be adopted as a lecture handbook for the courses in networking taught at the undergraduate level in computer science departments. The book will also be useful for graduate students and for practicing network engineers. The network engineer will find more simplified explanations, together with examples and comparison considerations, than are found in other manuals
